Our Mission
Protect, preserve, and raise awareness about the unique ecosystems of Zanzibar, with a particular focus on the conservation of the region’s endemic turtles and reptiles.
Our History
Umoja wa Wenye Mashamba Jozani (UWEMAJO) is an NGO registered under the Society Act No. 6 of 1995. It was officially registered by the Registrar’s Office in Zanzibar, Tanzania, on May 5, 2004, with registration number 282. The main office of UWEMAJO is located in Jozani, Chwaka constituency, South Region, Zanzibar, while the sub-office is situated in Mwanakwerekwe, Urban West Region, Zanzibar.
People in this area, especially farm owners, face poor economic conditions because they cannot effectively use their farms for agriculture. This is primarily due to crop destruction caused by red colobus monkeys. Villagers frequently complain about these monkeys raiding their crops and causing significant damage. This situation has created tensions within the community.
However, the presence of red colobus monkeys and other species in the area also generates substantial foreign exchange earnings for the government, as their uniqueness attracts tourists from around the world. This has led to the establishment of the Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, which is the only national park in Zanzibar. The park is home to the red colobus monkey, which is endemic to Zanzibar and is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
